Unmanned taxi "Yandex" in SkolkovoYandex and Hyundai Mobis, one of the world's largest manufacturers of automotive components, have
signed an agreement to develop a software and hardware system for UAVs for the 4th and 5th levels of autonomy. Judging by the wording of the press release, “Yandex” puts its software development into the project, and the Hyundai Mobis - the chassis.
According to the
classification of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), unmanned vehicles are classified into six levels of autonomy, starting with zero, that is, the fifth is the maximum level.
- Level 0 : lack of control over the machine, but there may be a notification system
- Level 1 : the driver must be ready at any time to take control. The following automated systems may be present: cruise control (ACC, Adaptive Cruise Control), automatic parking system and lane Keeping Assistance (LKA, Lane Keeping Assistance) type 2.
- Level 2 : the driver must respond if the system could not cope on its own. The system controls acceleration, braking and taxiing. The system may be disabled.
- Level 3 : the driver may not control the car on roads with “predictable” traffic (for example, autobahns), but be ready to take control.
- 4th level : similar to the 3rd level, but no longer requires the attention of the driver.
- Level 5 : on the part of the person, no action is required other than starting the system and specifying the destination. An automated system can reach any destination, unless prohibited by law.
In the first stage, the Hyundai and Kia stock cars will be used as drones.

In the future, Yandex is hoping to offer a new software and hardware complex to other automakers who can use it for unmanned vehicles, car-sharing services and taxis.
“Our unmanned driving technology is unique and has already proven its scalability,” said Arkady Volozh, head of the Yandex group of companies. - Yandex drones successfully ride around Moscow, Tel Aviv and Las Vegas, which means that they can be taught to ride anywhere. In just two years, we have moved from the first tests to the launch of a full-fledged service of an unmanned taxi. Now, thanks to the partnership with the Hyundai Mobis, we hope to move even faster. "
Anyone can test unmanned taxis “Yandex” by visiting test zones in Skolkovo and Innopolis. At the end of 2018, Yandex obtained a license to test unmanned vehicles in Israel, and in January 2019 showed a unmanned vehicle at CES in Nevada.
Hyundai Mobis is a subsidiary of the Hyundai Motor Group, which is among the top 5 largest automakers in the world.
The document also provides for the expansion of cooperation between the two companies in joint projects in the field of speech, navigation and cartographic and other technologies.
