Internet Archive plans to keep public posts of closing Google+

Google’s social network didn’t skyrocket just as it did with its previous social service, Wave. Of course, the reasons for failure are a little different, but the fact remains that Google + is closing. And although there are far fewer users in this social network than on Facebook, there is still valuable information.

Understanding this, the Internet Archive team decided to keep open social network entries before the service itself is closed. Representatives of the "Archive" announced this on Reddit .

Already deleted records or closed records will not be archived. The Internet Archive encouraged users who do not want their records to become public, to delete their accounts - in this case the content will not be archived.

In addition, there are limitations in the archiving system of open posts. In particular, no more than 500 comments will be saved, they will be presented as HTML pages. It is not yet clear whether the representatives of the Internet Archive will be able to save more comments. In addition, images and videos will not be saved in full resolution - to save space, it will be reduced.

Earlier, Google Inc. said it closes the social network for two reasons. The first is the presence of a vulnerability , due to which third-party developers could access the data of service users from 2015 to 2018 (they only realized in three years). And after fixing the vulnerability, the company decided not to make this case public.

The problem is that if the user gave permission to any application to access their data, the vulnerability allowed third-party developers to obtain sensitive information from both this user’s profile and his friends ’profiles. The scale of the problem is relatively small - 500 thousand accounts are under attack.

At the same time, Google stated that it is not known whether someone used the data or not. But you could parse the names of users, their e-mail, dates of birth, profile photos, occupation, etc.

The second problem is not very active use of the service. Simply put, he was unpopular despite all the attempts by the corporation to rectify the situation.

Strictly speaking, Google plus will not be completely closed. But it is modified, making it a service for corporate clients. According to the plan, the company will add more features that companies need, which will be discussed later.
