Despite the fact that the company's headquarters is outside the EU, Switzerland has bilateral agreements with the EU, according to which companies in this country receive funding for Horizon 2020. Proton also noted that about 40% of their users live in the EU, and that 20% of employees are based in offices located in the Czech Republic and Lithuania, which further justifies the financing.

The Proton blog said that funding represents the EU in accordance with the company's position on confidentiality:
“At present, the EU has made it very clear that it supports privacy rights and relies on Proton Technologies to provide a European answer to the data mining monopolies of such US technology giants like Google. Thus, we received not only a significant amount of funding, but also a powerful ally in the upcoming difficult battles. ”
To earn money, Proton has been tested by its team, technology and finance. They also had to visit Brussels to meet with the European Commission. The commission also received information about the firm from citizens and businesses in the EU who use the company's services to better assess suitability.

Proton said that the EU has special requirements for funds, and most of the funds have been allocated for the development of the third product, ProtonDrive , which should increase its global competitiveness. They also said that 2 million euros might not seem like such significant funds, but this will definitely speed up the development of ProtonDrive.
