At the end of 2018, we
tried to check the common perception that in IT, the salary of a remote employee is on average lower than that of an office worker. And they saw that if you take all the salaries of Russian IT specialists, then
remote employees earn an average of 40% more office space .
Having looked in more detail, we found that the salary of remote IT employees is higher than the salaries of office employees only in the regions, but lower than the office salaries of St. Petersburg and Moscow.

Today we decided to dig even deeper and compare the salaries of remote and office employees living in the same city. While limited to the sphere of software development and millionaire cities.
For the study took the salaries left in the
calculator of salaries "My Circle" over the past year. By the way, if you have not left your salary in 2019, we
invite you to do it .
So, which of the developers living in the same city earns more: working remotely or in the office?

As soon as we built a diagram of remote and office salaries for developers living in the same cities, several interesting discoveries immediately awaited us:
- Salaries of remote developers in different cities differ as much as office salaries.
- The salary level of remote developers is weakly related to the salary level of office developers in the same city.
- In all cities, with the exception of Moscow and St. Petersburg, the wages of remote developers are higher than office salaries.
- The highest wages are for remote developers who live in Novosibirsk, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg and Kazan.
- The remote workers of Novosibirsk have bypassed the remote workers of Moscow, and the remote workers of all the above 5 cities have bypassed St. Petersburg not only by remote, but even by office work.
It turns out that in all cities, except Moscow and St. Petersburg, it is more profitable to work remotely, but where is this benefit most noticeable?

- In Volgograd, the salary of remote developers is 2 times higher than office salaries, in Krasnoyarsk - 1.9 times.
- In Krasnodar, Ufa, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Kazan, Voronezh and Yekaterinburg - 1.6 - 1.7 times more.
- In Perm, Chelyabinsk, Samara and Nizhny Novgorod - 1.4 - 1.5 times more.
- In Rostov-on-Don, the salary of remote developers is less than the salary of office developers - by 1.25 times.
- In Moscow and St. Petersburg, working remotely is less profitable than in the office.
In conclusion, we will look at the salaries of office and remote employees on the box plot diagrams (“box with mustache”). All our observations we made on the basis of these data.
Dots indicate specific salaries. The central vertical line shows the median salary (half salaries are lower, and half higher than this point, this salary can be considered average), the box borders are 25 and 75 percents (divide the lower and upper half of salaries once again in half, as a result, half of all salaries are between them). The box's mustache is 10 and 90 percentile (it is conditionally possible to consider their minimum and maximum salaries).
