Digg founder opposes tags

As you know, tags are specific keywords that can be assigned to classify content. In our case we are talking about texts. Tagged content becomes easily searchable - it is located in the search for the same keyword.

Tags have become an invariable attribute of Web 2.0 sites, and especially social networking communities, because they help users maneuver in vast amounts of information and effectively find what they are looking for by simply typing the necessary tag in the address bar, for example: habrahabr.ru/tag/Web 2.0 / .

However, the introduction of tags must be approached intelligently. Speaking at the recent technical conference "The Future of Web Applications," Digg founder Kevin Rose said that many sites today are mindlessly introducing tags without a clear understanding of the meaning of this action. He said that there is no Digg on the site and in the near future there will be no tags. It uses a very detailed hierarchical rubricator, which is quite enough to search for information. If you embed tags, the content “is broken into pieces that are too far apart,” Rose said.

The subject heading can be used for the same purpose as the tags, but it is limited in nature. In many cases, it does not allow to convey the meaning of the material.

By the way, the presence of tags is the main distinguishing feature of the new portal Netscape , which was created in the image of Digg and positioned as a competitor for it. On the Netscape website, tags are effectively combined with a thematic rubricator, becoming new subcategories there ( instructions for proper tagging ).

According to some experts , Kevin Rose’s decision not to use tags looks almost comical, because tags are one of the fundamental principles of social networks organized around content (social bookmarking).

However, the system of tags on the site can be implemented in different ways. Sometimes it is really effective, and sometimes it is not. A negative example is the YouTube site, where tag searches often do not work. In this case, it makes no sense to place tags.
