Waymo taught robobomi obey the gestures of the traffic controller

Many drivers and pedestrians do not remember the gestures of the traffic controller that they learned in school. Waymo unmanned machines now have no such problems. On the video from the car software successfully recognizes the police officer (yellow box) and his gestures.

For clarity, the video clip is accelerated three times. On it, one of the Waymo cars detects an unregulated intersection and stops at it, although the traffic lights do not work. The software of the car detects a traffic controller and waits until he gestures for the passage.

This is another impressive demonstration that the autopilot understands interprets human gestures. Two years ago, Waymo told me that the sensors and software of cars recognize cyclists well and react to signals that they give hands, for example, to turn or stop. The illustration below shows a fragment of the frame where the cyclist gives a signal about the desire to join the stream. Accordingly, the robility will slow down and miss it.

Waymo systematically continues to increase the roll forward of its robomobiles, gradually modifying the software. The latest Waymo report says that in 2018, unmanned vehicles were leaving two million kilometers.

Even more impressive is the autonomy ratio. It is calculated depending on the number of cases when a computer for security gives control to a human driver. In Waymo cars, this figure is 0.09 per 1000 miles: much lower than the competition. This is the equivalent of 17,900 km of unmanned continuous driving.
