For more than a year, a special division of Microsoft has been working hard to create a proprietary Ajax toolkit for ASP.Net. Now the work has come to an end. Microsoft representatives have noted great interest in the new product. For those several months, while the preliminary version is available, more than 250 thousand downloads have already been registered. Scott Guthrie, general manager of the web development tools division of Microsoft, published on his blog the
latest information about the timing of the final Atlas 1.0 release and the features of this product.
Scott Guthrie said that Atlas 1.0 will receive full technical support (24/7/365) and a standard ten-year
life cycle . The toolkit will be compatible with Visual Studio 2005, and in the future we plan to fully integrate it into the next version of Visual Studio, code-named Orcas, which will be released next year.
The company plans to release Ajax-tools around the end of this year. First, a beta version will appear, then a release candidate, and after that the final date of the official release will be determined. To meet these deadlines, the most basic features will be included in the Atlas 1.0 package. They will be selected from three basic components, which are planned to be released separately from each other. Now officially approved the names of these components.
1. A set of ready-made JavaScript scripts released under the name
Microsoft AJAX Library . The scripts will work under any browser and will be compatible with any web server, including PHP and ColdFusion.

2. Server extensions integrated with ASP.NET will be called
ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX Extensions . The same components will be integrated into the next version of ASP.NET.
3. The Atlas Control Toolkit today is a collection of free open source components that are auxiliary to server extensions. In the future, the name of the set will change to
ASP.NET AJAX Control Toolkit .
Atlas toolkit will 100% support all platforms and all browsers. It can become quite popular among developers, who with its help will be able to add real Ajax functionality to ASP.Net applications.
