Cleversafe and OceanStore make the global file system from the Internet

Cleversafe cryptographic module encodes information, and then sends it to different parts of the Internet. Thus, two problems are solved simultaneously: 1) information storage; 2) cryptographic data protection.

Distributed storage systems can not be called a novelty. However, the project Cleversafe, which recently even hit the pages of the NY Times , has one distinguishing feature: it is an open source project that develops as open source. According to some experts, due to its openness, this system in the future may well turn into a single global distributed repository of information that will be used by both corporations and individuals. This approach is much safer and safer than storing information on your own computer or on a remote server, which can be damaged at any time. This is especially true due to the fact that the amount of user data increases exponentially every year. When compared with existing hosting services, a distributed system is potentially cheaper and better protected.

Cleversafe borrowed the original system of distributing information into 11 fragments with subsequent recovery from any six from the work of the famous cryptographer Adi Shamir (Adi Shamir) “How to share a secret”, published in 1979. This work explains how to divide information into many fragments and publish in open access without giving out the contents of the document.

Since Cleversafe provides redundant duplication of information, even when using unreliable hosting you can always expect that at least six of the 11 sources will be available, and then the information can be recovered.

As part of the pilot project, Cleversafe is now based on 11 servers, but the organizers hope that tens of thousands of volunteers will join the project in the future to provide free storage capacity. Anyone can participate in the project: recently released client software for Windows.

The system of “spraying” data on the Internet differs from the traditional approach to distributed information storage, when identical files are copied and then synchronized. In this sense, the Cleversafe system is similar to the research project OceanStore , which is being developed at Berkeley. There, too, are trying to create a global distributed file system.
