Patented surfing using mobile phone swaying

Opera users are probably familiar with the unique feature of this browser: it understands the commands that the mouse cursor draws in the air . It’s like an alternative interface: you don’t need to look for a button and press it, but you just need to move the cursor in the right direction.

A similar surfing system on the Internet was patented by the American company V-Enable (application for US patent No. 20060107213 ). Only here, instead of the mouse cursor, a phone, PDA or other mobile device is used. The device sways in the air, and motion sensors transform this wave into commands.

Of course, using the swaying method, it is impossible to perform full-fledged surfing: for example, it is very difficult to type text in forms or a website address in the address bar. The V-Enable patent assumes that the work of motion sensors is combined with the use of a mobile device keyboard and other input methods. Motion sensors can only be used for some frequently repeated movements while surfing, such as scrolling or page turning. For example, by tilting the mobile phone right, left, forward and back, it is convenient to move around the geographical map on the screen or control a character in a computer game.

The application states that not only motion sensors and accelerometers can be used to determine movement, but also a video stream from an optical sensor or digital camera of a mobile phone (this is how an optical mouse works). Voice commands can be used as an additional input method. By the way, the V-Enable company specializes in voice technologies for entering information into a mobile phone. Its main business is voice search recognition system and instant retrieval of search results from the Internet.

Perhaps working with speech technologies, the company's specialists have revealed the missing element, which is not enough for convenient surfing the Internet using a voice interface. Mobile phone swaying technology perfectly complements the voice interface, making it much easier.
