Six Apart buys Rojo online news reader

The news of the purchase of Rojo has already been confirmed by various sources, including the co-founder of this American startup in his personal blog and in the official press release of Six Apart .

The Rojo web service is one of the most technically advanced online RSS readers. A recent comparative test has shown that, in functional terms, it is one of the most advanced programs of its kind, along with Bloglines and News Alloy . At the same time, Rojo has additional functionality that is absent from competitors. For example, support for tags, a social network for users, a rating system for blogs and individual posts (Bloglines does not have this), as well as the publication of its collection of feeds and a recommendation system (News Alloy does not have this). In addition, Rojo supports importing / exporting the OPML blog list, tagging individual objects, sending an object by e-mail at the touch of a button, full-text searching the feeds archive, the number of subscribers, and many other functions. In general, among all the RSS-aggregators, the Rojo project with its Digg-style rating and voting system, tag cloud and user-friendly Ajax interface was recognized as the most consistent with the spirit of Web 2.0.

Rojo’s technological excellence is recognized by its new owners from Six Apart , as they have appointed Rojo technicians to high positions. For example, Lead Programmer Aaron Emig was appointed Chief Key Technology Manager.

Thus, Six Apart, with the purchase of Rojo, receives both a functional news reader and a search engine feed. Of course, many Rojo technologies can be integrated into various Six Apart blogging services. Although this will not be so easy. Rojo modules are written in Java, while Six Apart prefers to use Perl. All applications of this company, including TypePad and the blogger platform of the new generation Vox, are created on Perl.

Apparently, no one is going to close the Rojo online service, so it will function in the same format for a while. New owners can use it to expand their advertising platform, which consists of pages on Livejournal.

The amount of the transaction between Six Apart and Rojo has not been disclosed. According to experts , it does not exceed $ 5 million. Rojo Startup was founded in June 2003, the service began its work in October 2004 after financial injections totaling about $ 3.5 million from a number of venture capital investors.
