Service Hitwise has published statistics on attendance at US online stores for four weeks
from July 30 to August 26, 2006 . Judging by these figures, the
Google search site is the undisputed leader among traffic generators for online stores. It provides them with 14.93% of the entire audience (last year it was 9.45%). The second place is occupied by the
Yahoo Search search engine with a score of 4.69% (it was 3.72%), and the third place was
taken by MSN Search with 2.33% (it was 0.73%).
This indicator indicates not only the popularity of the search engine. But also on the relevance of the search and the effectiveness of contextual advertising. Most likely, more than half of the visitors come from the Google site just for advertisements, and not for normal links among the search results. Although you should not underestimate the share of the so-called "navigation" queries when the site name is entered into the search box, and then the user navigates through the first among the search results or the advertising link.
The most curious part of the current study of incoming traffic in online stores is that the leading role among traffic-generators has entered the social network
MySpace with an indicator of 2.53%. She showed significant progress even with an indicator of six months ago (1.28%). However, there is little surprising, because now MySpace is one of the most visited sites on the Internet, and its share in all American traffic by August 2006 increased to 4.88%. By the way, even on news sites, traffic from MySpace has already grown to 1.39%.
Most of the social network users are directed to the following online stores and message boards:
eBay ,
Amazon.com ,
Gateway ,
Walmart.com and
Craigslist .
