Yesterday, the German media company "Deutsche Welle" opened the third international competition
Weblog Awards , which will determine the best journalistic blogs in the world in 2006. Weblogs in ten languages - Russian, English, German, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and Farsi can take part in it and receive awards from the “Best Of The Blogs” family.
According to the organizers (Deutsche Welle, Reporters Without Borders and Radio Netherlands), applications for participation in the competition are accepted from August 31 to September 30. Nomination will occur from 1 to 22 October, and the Internet voting - from 23 to 11 November. Winners will be announced on November 11 in Berlin.
Weblogs have a tangible impact on the media, says Julien Peng from Reporters Without Borders. “The main thing in weblogs is that they give voice to people who have been dumb before,” he told the
DW-World .de publication. “Everyone can decide for himself whether he wants to write in accordance with the political line or not.”

However, the latter circumstance is not so simple. Mr. Peng emphasized: if five years ago, the situation with freedom of speech was the worst in Asia - in China and Vietnam, for example, now censorship on the Internet has become an international problem. According to him, in the near future, more and more dictators and repressive governments will try to direct and control the Internet.
Blogging is an open platform where you can express your position. But the ease of access to it does not reduce the likelihood of dismal consequences - such as even harassment and arrest. “Not only journalists, but also simple bloggers are persecuted and arrested because of publications on the Web,” says Julien Pen. - The “The BOBs - Best Of The Blogs” international award is a good way to identify the real price of freedom of speech. ”
Returning to the Weblog Awards - 2006, we note that this year 15 competition categories are scheduled. Some of them are already known - Best Weblog or Best Podcast, for example, others appeared for the first time. For example, introduced the award for the best corporate blog (Best Corporate Blog). The Blogwurst Award will be awarded for the most peculiar blog. This can cheer, embarrass or surprise with unusual themes. Weblogs applying for this award must be truly “different”, reports
