Professional journalists tidy up their hands online

This year, the online News Association (ONA) annual award in the field of online journalism is claimed more than ever by many online versions of paper newspapers and glossy magazines.

For the prestigious contest, which is called the Pulitzer Prize for Internet journalists, 694 applicants were nominated in 18 thematic categories. 73 of them reached the final. The awards ceremony for the best online journalists will be held on October 7, 2006 during the ONA annual meeting.

An expert analysis of the finalists reveals the main trend of this year: an unprecedentedly large presence of online versions of paper newspapers and other traditional media. In non-student nominations, they simply have an overwhelming majority: 28 websites and 39 places among the finalists. The website of the newspaper USA Today stands out, which became a finalist in four nominations at once. In addition to it, the website of The New York Times newspaper is presented in three nominations.

Glossy magazines also demonstrate a professional approach to online journalism. Eight magazine web sites claim an online award, as do five cable network websites, three public television sites and one site representing a regional television studio.

In other words, offline journalism is gradually picking up online hands. Perhaps the main reason for this is that offline media companies have accumulated huge financial resources and can afford to invest heavily in the Internet. Specialized online media can hardly compete. This year, among the finalists of the ONA award, there are only nine online publications. In this case, among them is Slate, which was recently bought by the owners of the Washington Post newspaper, as well as The Smoking Gun, owned by Court TV. That is, in fact, there are even fewer “clean” Internet users in the list of candidates for the professional award in the field of online journalism.

The complete list of finalists in each thematic category contains several subsections for large, medium and small websites, depending on their attendance. We will not reprint the entire list, but mention only those 11 nominations, where our colleagues from online publications claim to receive the award. Who knows, maybe in a couple of years they will not remain among the nominees at all (one hope for blogs).
