German programmer Leon Weber created a special
counter for the Wikipedia site. With it you can see which articles on the site cause the greatest interest among the public.
The rating list of the most popular articles takes into account the information for the last three days to display the average daily attendance. Information is constantly updated, so when generating a page at different times, it gives a different result. The developer warns that his tool is still being tested, so he does not guarantee the accuracy of the results.
The most popular page of Wikipedia, as it should be, is the
main page : 1.56 million
page views on average per day, that is, 4% of the total traffic. Here and below are the results from the English-language section, although the Weber counter allows you to view information from both the German and Czech sections (the
source code of the counter with comments).
The five most popular articles in the English-language Wikipedia look like this:
')
1.
Homepage .
2.
JohnBenet Ramsey .
3.
United States .
4.
Wikipedia .
5.
Pluto .
Obviously, the main audience of Wikipedia is Americans, because the second and third positions in the ranking are purely American topics (John Bennett Ramsey is a six-year beauty queen who was found dead in 1996, and now her former teacher tells the court in detail drugs and raped her).
However, some of the other articles that are present in the ranking, can not but come as a surprise. We present only some of the positions from the Top 100. Judge for yourself which questions most of all interest Americans.
9.
Pokemon .
11.
List of models and actresses who participated in the show of big breasts .
17.
List of Disney characters .
19.
List of female pornstars .
21.
Theory of the peak of Hubbert .
27.

29.

33.
Pornography .
34.
Gregory Perelman .
Looking at this list, one can understand the reasons for the popularity of Wikipedia, which has already reached the first place in the list of Internet reference resources. It is obvious that many of the topics listed above are extremely poorly and poorly covered in traditional encyclopedias. The same sex postures are hard to find in Britannicus or Encarte. But in Wikipedia there is complete and comprehensive information.
