The Germans figured out how to save Wikipedia from vandalism

If the German experiment on combating vandalism on Wikipedia is successful, the procedure for the mandatory confirmation of edits can be extended to all other national versions of Wikipedia.

The founder of the folk encyclopedia, Jimmy Wales (Jimmy Wales) said in an interview with News.com that the new feature was conceived by members of the German community of "Wikipedists". They will set up an experiment in their national section (this is the second largest section of the encyclopedia after English). The experiment should begin at the end of August.

The creators of the world's most popular reference resource still cannot solve the main problem - vandalism. He takes on different guises. Sometimes on the pages of Wikipedia, the most real battles between militant groups are played out, which are infinite number of times the articles are rummaged one way or the other. Biographies of famous personalities, such as, for example, the current US President George W. Bush, change almost every day, so that at times they have to be “frozen”.

On the other hand, some seldom-visited Wikipedia pages are sometimes used for practical jokes, which also adversely affects the image of the largest encyclopedia. Thousands of volunteer editors struggle with vandalism and undo the revisions made by hooligans, but even they are not able to constantly monitor more than 2 million pages in 229 national versions of the project.

The Wikipedian community is constantly on the lookout for an acceptable compromise between creative freedom and censorship. Recently, various “micromeres” have been gradually introduced, which slightly shift the balance towards censorship. Prior approval of edits is another such measure.

In the German experiment, every correction on the project pages should be approved by an experienced editor, that is, from a user with a long registration in the project (how old the registration should be - not yet decided; maybe four days would be enough) and a certain authority. With this system, the usual vandalism will not work. Alternatively, another option is being considered: put a ten-minute delay for automatic editing.

If the experiment is successful, it will be extended to all other sections. Then Wikipedia will be able to re-open for editing the first page of your site. It was blocked five years ago after numerous attacks by vandals.
