Steve Rubel calls for blocking financial sources of spammers

Garbage blogs, doorway pages, are increasingly polluting the blogosphere, while helping the cyberspace nouveau riche earn millions of dollars through contextual advertising. These financial flows need to be cut off.

In the September issue of Wired magazine (it is not online yet) interesting statistics on spam blogs has been published. An analysis of their economic attractiveness and the threat they pose to the blogosphere is given. Some numbers are pretty curious, says Steve Rubel on his Micro Persuasion blog.

For example, the magazine reports referring to research conducted by the University of Maryland that 56% of all blogs in the English-language blogosphere belong to spammers and optimizers.

Another independent study in December 2005 revealed more than 100,000 spam blogs on Blogger.com alone.

At the end of last year, Umbria Communications conducted a study and found that among new blogs spam is from 10% to 20%. According to some search queries in the largest blogger search engines Technorati , IceRocket and BlogPulse, the number of spam in the first hundred of search results approaches 80%, and the average is 44%.

The level of spam in the English-speaking blogosphere has reached alarming proportions. Some statistical services give out data that 94% of all content on blogs is spam .

The magazine also published an interview with a man who, with the help of a network of spamming blogs, earned more than $ 70,000 in three months.

Unfortunately, the Wired article doesn’t pay any attention at all to one of the main reasons for spam blog prosperity — contextual advertising. It is through affiliate programs like Google AdSense that spammers make money. According to Steve Rubel, you need to deal with the problem of spam blogs not only through filtering in the search index, but also through a ban on participation in affiliate programs of contextual advertising. It will be even more effective, because it will block the main source of financial income. This is easy to organize. You just need to tighten the rules for registration in the affiliate program so that each site has to prove its original origin.
