SmartMarketing on the PDA market in the II quarter of 2006

Growth in sales of PDAs, smartphones and communicators grew by 271.6% over the year, according to the SmartMarketing report. A total of 220,000 units were sold over the period, against 81,000 in the second quarter of 2005.

In general, the market showed positive growth and significantly exceeded the results of the same period last year, the researchers say. The semiannual dynamics is slightly more significant: the growth in sales in the first half of 2006 relative to the corresponding period last year amounted to 274.2% - 329,000 units against 120,000. Experts believe that high market growth rates will continue in the next quarter, and even until the end of the year .

“Smartphones are the driving force behind the development of the personal communication devices segment,” said Svetlana Zavyalova, marketing manager at SmartMarketing. “And the undisputed leader in it is Nokia, thanks to the efforts of which, the Symbian platform has regained the positions it lost earlier. Right behind Nokia, HTC, its S100 / 110/200 communicators, are firmly entrenched in the first lines of the bestseller list in this market. Sony Ericsson is in third place with its popular music smartphones. ”

According to the latest results, Palm, High-Tech Computers (HTC), Eten, Nokia, Sony Ericsson made the top five most popular manufacturers of PDAs and smartphones in Russia. Bestsellers of them:

• HP iPAQ hx Series
• HTC S Series
• Eten M Series
• Palm LifeDrive
• Nokia N Series

Researchers have noted a good market growth for Sony Ericsson. They point out targeted diversification of the model range and the repositioning of Symbian OS-based devices into “multimedia computers” as sources of success. The position of Windows Mobile has deteriorated somewhat.

However, the overall market share of the Windows Mobile segment in Q2 2006 was 53.3% (41.4% in the same period of 2005). The share of Symbian OS is set at 43.7% (27% in 2005). Against the background of the growth of rivals, PalmOS is experiencing the strongest stagnation: 3% in the second quarter of 2006, 30.9% in the second quarter of 2005.
