VGTRK sued Mail.ru for theft of video content

The All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK) yesterday filed a lawsuit with the Moscow Arbitration Court against Mail.ru LLC: see cases A40-69242 / 08-27-685 and A40-69243 / 08-51-601 on the court's website. The lawsuit is related to the protection of intellectual property rights.



As it is easy to guess, the essence of the dispute lies in the theft of the exclusive content of the Vesti TV channel and other VGTRK media projects. This content was placed on aggregator sites, including Mail.ru.



According to the information available, Mail.ru resources have lined up whole films owned by VGTRK, Interfax reports. Apparently, this is the first trial in the history of Russian justice related to the theft of video content on the Internet. Moreover, as it became known to Interfax, similar claims regarding the illegal placement of video products were made by the All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company and the popular social resource Vkontakte.ru.



Representatives of Mail.ru told Interfax the following: “At present, our legal service has not received any complaints or claims from the FSUE VGTRK, so we cannot say anything about the substance of the lawsuit. We have been cooperating closely with the All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company and its various subdivisions for a long time, for example, the Vesti channel, we are doing joint special projects. We think that we will be able to resolve this issue peacefully. ”

Mail.ru is one of the largest Russian Internet companies. The company launched the video hosting service in October 2006.
