The real punishment for stealing a virtual amulet

A Dutch court found two teenagers guilty of stealing virtual things in a computer game and sentenced them to community service. In all, only a few such cases have been considered in the world and different definitions of “virtual things” have appeared in them.

The district court of Leeuwarden found that 15 and 14-year-olds forced a 13-year-old boy to transfer the “virtual amulet and virtual mask” in the game RuneScape to their accounts.

"According to Dutch law, virtual goods are still goods, and therefore it is theft," the court said on Tuesday, passing the sentence.

The identity of the defendants and the victim were not disclosed.

A 15-year-old was sentenced to 200 hours of community service, and a 14-year-old was sentenced to 160 hours.

Do you think virtual things in toys are objects of property, the protection of which should be formalized by law?
