Golden Telecom launched a network of 3,000 WiFi points in Moscow

Golden Telecom installed 3,000 WiFi access points in Moscow. Plans to deploy a network of 5000 WiFi nodes.

According to Jean-Pierre Vandromme, General Manager of the company, given in the financial report , the introduction of wireless Internet access technologies is proceeding as planned. He said that the Wi-Fi network from Golden Telecom is already the largest in Europe.

The decision to create a large WiFi network in Moscow was made in 2005, when implementing a strategy to provide high-speed access services, Golden Telecom entered into a framework agreement with Nortel. “Golden Telecom is planning to offer universal internal and external access services that most of the nearly 3.9 million families living in Moscow will be able to use,” the company said. Internet telephony services (via VoIP) were to be included in the package of this offer. The prices for high-speed access services of the company promised competitive prices. In addition, the provision of higher access speeds than in other Moscow providers was announced.

Golden Telecom reports that its revenue growth rates in Moscow correspond to the average market. In the regions, they are ahead of the average.

In addition to WiFi access, the company began deploying DSL hubs in Moscow, the Moscow Region and other regions of Russia and the CIS. Already installed more than 2100 nodes with an aggregate capacity of 58,806 ports. In certain areas, it is planned to begin providing Triple Play services, including broadband Internet access with VoIP and digital television.

It was also stated that the company attaches great importance to acquiring home networks and companies that have access to the “last mile”. Recall, in the framework of this strategy, Golden Telecom acquired in March 2006 70% of Tatar Intellectual Communications, an alternative operator operating in the Republic of Tatarstan. In April 2006, 100% of TTK LLC, an alternative operator in Ukraine, and network and technical resources from BINAR Telephone Company CJSC, an alternative operator in Yekaterinburg, were purchased. In June 2006, Golden Telecom completed the acquisition of 74% of the company Kubtelecom LLC, the largest alternative operator in Krasnodar Territory.
