A modern soldier needs more and more a capacious and compact power source for wearable equipment and gear. To a laptop computer, night vision devices and thermal imaging, radio communications and global positioning, very soon high-tech clothing, which also needs an autonomous power source, can be added. High ranks of the US Army seriously attended to this problem and the search for its solution.
Last year, the Pentagon announced a tender for the development of miniature fuel cells for military equipment, and in the long term for high-tech clothing for US soldiers. The winner of this tender was announced on September 9, 2008, and it became one of the largest chemical giants - DuPont, which created the fuel cell variant together with the German company SFC Smart Fuel Cell. In addition to grants for further research, DuPont will receive a prize of $ 1 million from the US Armed Forces Supply Department.

DuPont's new fuel cells boast a lifespan of 96 hours. At the same time, they are capable of consistently producing a voltage of 200 volts and a power of 20 watts, and the weight of the kit is no more than 4 kg. It is also known that methanol will be used as a fuel in them, and only 300 grams of this substance is sufficient for full filling. These characteristics are more than satisfied with the US Department of Defense, and new elements were adopted with the army index M-25.
In the future, compact and capacious fuel cells will allow military engineers to continue to work and succeed in projects to create "smart" uniforms for military purposes. And who knows, perhaps, the appearance of military clothing with built-in medical sensors, changing color and texture, equipped with life support systems and first aid, is not long to wait.
