MySpace came out on top

Service Hitwise has published site traffic statistics for the first week of July (July 2-8 ). According to published figures, the first place in popularity among American users for the first time in its history came MySpace.com . He received 4.46% of all US traffic. This is more than that of Yahoo (4.42%), Yahoo (4.25%) and Google (3.89%).

As it is easy to guess, in this case, the concept of leadership MySpace is relative, because the attendance of various Yahoo sites was calculated separately from each other. If we summarize them, then in the first place, of course, Yahoo will remain, with almost a twofold advantage.

Among the social networks MySpace is unmatched. Here the position of the leader is firm: 79.9% of the market. At the closest pursuers, attendance is ten to twenty times lower: Facebook (7.5%) and Xanga (3.8%).

To understand the phenomenal increase in the popularity of MySpace, you can pick up historical data with similar statistics from Hitwise. For example, exactly two years ago, in July 2004, MySpace had only 0.1% of the traffic of American users, and in July 2005 - about 1.9%. In absolute numbers, MySpace attendance growth was 132% for the year and 4,300% for two years.

As can be seen on the graph , a significant increase in attendance occurred in March-June of this year. During this period, the share of MySpace in American traffic increased from 3% to 4.6%. Moreover, during this time the social network has firmly become the leader in the list of the most popular "navigation" search queries on the Internet (see table ). In the top ten most popular requests for the last month, there are five MySpace related requests at once. Information obtained from the logs of American Internet providers.

At first glance it may seem that the main part of the traffic in the social network MySpace is generated by regular users of this site who sit here almost around the clock and load hundreds of pages every day. In fact, statistics says something different. In particular, the company Nielsen // NetRatings takes measurements on how many times on average during a month users access certain sites. So, the maximum level of repeat visits is shown by the del.icio.us audience (an average of 63.9 visits per month), while for MySpace this indicator is surprisingly small: only 19.1. For comparison, even visitors to Flickr photo service visit this site on average 31.2 times per month.

Experts warn that the overwhelming popularity of the MySpace site may be temporary, because the functionality of social networks is gradually appearing on other sites, including even on media sites.
