Accenture and
Economist Intelligence Unit surveyed 300 organizations, one way or another connected with IP-TV, on the profitability of their businesses. It turned out that only 4% of respondents expect to receive substantial income from IPTV services in 2006.
34% of companies involved in the IPTV industry, build their business, believing to get decent dividends only after 3 years. They are not sure of a quick profit, but they make serious bets for the future. One third of companies employed in IPTV (out of 300 respondents) plan to increase revenue by attracting new customers. A fifth of them, speaking of profit, emphasizes the prospects of the video-on-demand service.
Alexander Malis, vice president of
Corbina Telecom, agrees with the latter. The main money, he said, will bring “video-on-demand”, as well as advertising placements that accompany the service. And tangible incomes will appear in a couple of years.

“The very concept of IPTV has appeared recently,” Alexander explains. - And some codecs are written only in 2006. Therefore, as Alexander Bell couldn’t expect instant profit from telephony, we can’t wait for a quick income from IPTV. This, in particular, requires the deployment of broadband networks, which is not a single day process. ”
Alexander Malis said that the work that can be tracked on the
Corbina.Tv website is still of a research nature, but in the future, IPTV Corbina will become an entirely commercial project. “Although for some category of users the service will be free,” said Alexander.
Alexey Turunov, head of analytical department at
MTU-Intel (the
Stream trademark), also says that the Russian IPTV market is now at an initial stage of its development. “Major players are only forming by gaining subscriber base and“ mastering ”Russian territories,” says Alexey. - At this stage, it is difficult to expect significant revenues from IPTV, especially since traditionally the competition with free air TV in Russian cities is high, and the income of the population, on the contrary, is not very high. Currently, in terms of profitability, we see IPTV as an additional service to broadband Internet access, but in the future it is very promising. ”
“That is why,” continues Alexei Turunov, “we have already begun to develop multimedia services based on Stream TV and to produce our own television content, which, according to our estimates, can bring substantial income in the future, and now also serves as an additional incentive for potential subscribers. I mean, for example, the video-on-demand service, which our company launches into commercial operation in the coming month, is the first among Russian IPTV operators, as well as thematic channels of its own production. ”
