YouOS: operating system that works through a browser

If you want to look into the future for a bit, then go to the YouOS website and click on the “Try a Demo” link. After that, see how your browser turns into a desktop with shortcuts for mail, chat, and ... surfing the Web. Here, on the desktop is a text editor of the “Notepad” type, which leaves text notes on the screen in the form of small “stickers”. On the table, you can even change the wallpaper ( screenshot ).

The developers themselves describe the program they created as an “experimental, collaborative, operational web system.” The project started in December 2005 and by now has achieved a certain fame. For example, the number of applications in the YouOS system is already close to two hundred. These include various office applications, RSS readers, email clients, games, and more. There is even a web browser, which is actually very funny, because the browser runs under the YouOS operating system, which itself is launched from the browser. Any programmer can create his own programs, as well as participate in the development of YouOS.

For the user, the process of “installing the program” is performed in the same way as on a regular PC: you need to launch the system installer and select the required “distribution” from the list - the program will immediately appear on the desktop. "Collaborative operating system" means that users can easily exchange documents and programs through a list of friends. YouOS has its own file system and built-in presence detection, which in real-time updates the status of friends from the contact list.

As you can guess, the creators of YouOS exploit the old idea of a “thin client”. Users now do not need to have Windows, do not even need to have a full-fledged computer with a powerful processor and hard drive. Any device with a screen capable of going online and downloading the YouOS system from the web is enough. Already here, in the system, each registered user will find his personal documents and familiar programs - all that is needed for normal work.

Although the idea of "thin client" sounded in the 80s. last century, but now it is as close as possible to realization. Of course, YouOS is unlikely to in the future seriously claim to replace Windows, but this is an excellent demonstration of the concept of a network operating system (and this is not the only such project). Especially when you consider that YouOS was created by four college graduates practically “on the knee”.

And if you submit a similar project with a billion-dollar budget? As Slate journalists write , now it's easier for you to believe that the mythical Google PC, which is developed somewhere in China or on Ukrainian IRC channels, has become closer to reality. The YouOS system even in the current version 0.11 demonstrates what Google can aspire to.
