The popular
National Geographic edition together with the
National Science Foundation and
Science magazine annually conduct the “Vizualization Challenge 2008”: a contest that identifies the best scientific images (these can be photos, drawings, modeling) of the year. The main condition: images should be created using modern technologies for visualization of “complex scientific topics”.

This drawing was created by Mario De Stefano from Second University of Naples, Italy. Small green diatoms create the illusion of "forest" by joining marine invertebrates. The picture was taken with a scanning electron microscope in the Mediterranean Sea. First place in the "photographic" category of the event.
