New degree of density. 260 GB in 1.8 inch HDD

At the CEATEC exhibition, TDK announced its new 260 GB hard drive. Through the use of the prototype head TMR, TDK managed to cram this entire volume into the 1.8-inch form factor.

Thus, TDK broke the density record, which is now 803 gigabit per square inch. The previous one belonged to Toshiba and was equal to “only” 378 gigabits per square inch. It was possible to achieve such a result by combining the use of the technology of perpendicular magnetic recording and those TMR heads.

TDK engineers say that now their task is to achieve a density of 1 terabit of information per 1 square inch.
