We continue the topic of domains for South Ossetia and Abkhazia

Recently, I raised the topic of the possibility of South Ossetia and Abkhazia getting their own domain zones, the rumors about which are persistently exaggerated on the Internet. And although she did not receive a very wide resonance, in the comments there were several practical thoughts about this. Having carefully studied them and the state of affairs in this area, one can come to the following conclusions.

The order of allocation of two-letter domain zones is as follows. First, the country recognizes the UN. Then the “International Organization for Standardization” assigns a two-letter code to the state. Only then can ICANN decide to create a new domain zone corresponding to the given country. The only exception to this rule is extended autonomy. But since neither the generally recognized state nor the official autonomy of South Ossetia and Abkhazia is to become, they will not receive two-letter domains (ccTLDs).

Therefore, perhaps the most real way for these territories to organize their own zone is to wait until the commercial registration of first-level domain names begins. Theoretically, this will happen next year. However, when in practice there will be paid domain zones, it is not yet clear.

By the way, in theory there is another way to get your own domain zone. This is a three-letter geographic first-level domain (gTLD). Just today there is only one such zone - CAT (Catalonia). Therefore, to talk about this solution to the problem is not seriously.
