Internet radio has been deferred

Listeners Pandora , Last.FM and other similar services can breathe a sigh of relief: their favorite Internet radio will not be closed in the near future (although Last.FM is a British service, so the news in American law does not affect it directly).

Lobbyists of the recording associations failed to delay the adoption by Congress of the procedural amendment HR 7084 , which extends the deadline by which the size of licensing fees for Internet radio should be established. Today they are prohibitively high. The adoption of the amendment gives the Internet services the delay they need to continue negotiations with the RIAA.

Due to the financial crisis, the US parliament in emergency mode worked on Saturday, September 27, which was very helpful. On the same day, legislators were able to review and adopt the HR 7084 amendment on Internet radio. On Monday, it must be approved by the Congress.

The news came on time, because the owners of the Pandora service, for example, have already started to panic . According to their calculations, with $ 23 million in revenue this year, they will have to pay $ 17 million in licensing fees, which is 70%, while satellite radio stations pay only 7.5%.
