Today Ajax is the most fashionable technology in web design. And this fashion has come seriously and for a long time. So far, we have noted only a few instances of the implementation of Ajax interfaces, but after a couple of years, Ajax technology will become the de facto standard in website design. David Smith, vice-president of Gartner, spoke about this at the annual Gartner regional conference in Tel Aviv.
According to
him , the use of Ajax is becoming more and more commonplace. Now there is no need to invest huge amounts of money in development, since convenient and simple packages for developing Ajax applications have appeared on the market. It’s a sin not to use them, because Ajax offers the easiest and cheapest way to improve the visual appeal of a website.
Ajax is more than just technology that is encrypted using the abbreviation Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. In fact, Ajax is an integral part of what is commonly called the “next generation web,” that is, Web 2.0. That is why the Gartner analyst attaches so much importance to this programming technique. Sites that do not meet the new requirements will inevitably begin to experience difficulties.
In fact, in terms of usability, the Ajax sites and sites of the previous generation are heaven and earth. It is easy to verify this fact if you check the most famous Ajax applications yourself, for example,
Gmail ,
Google Maps or the new beta version of
Yahoo! Mail .
')
Of course, there are downsides to Ajax technology. For example, it is not always correct operation of the browser's “Back” button in Ajax applications. Or the inability to save a bookmark to one or another "page" of the site. In addition, Ajax applications necessarily require that the JavaScript processing function be activated in the user's browser.
However, none of these negative aspects does not prevent the emergence of more and more new Ajax applications. In his report, David Smith said that almost all new startups that claim to be involved with Web 2.0 (Zimbra, 37 Signals, Flickr, SocialText, and others) are actively using Ajax technology.
From all this, Gartner analytics experts make this conclusion: with an 80% probability by 2008, Ajax-style websites will become the dominant type of interface for web applications.
It is clear that the websites of the most diverse profile in a hurry to begin to update the design. But experts warn: the usual redesign is not enough. To get a significant effect, you need to implement other aspects of the Web 2.0, including changing the very culture of business in the spirit of Web 2.0. For example, company executives can start blogs to communicate with ordinary employees. This is a good start for business reform.
