The line of Intel Optane drives using
3D XPoint memory modules has been replenished with new models from the consumer segment. In addition to the family of
Optane Memory , designed for the needs of caching, enthusiasts are now available SSD Optane 800p series with a capacity of 58 and 118 GB, which can be considered as a variant of the carrier for the operating system of the computer. Our colleagues from the

So, the Optane 800p SSD is built on the same hardware platform as the Optane Memory, but at the same time it has several times more volume and somewhat better characteristics. In general, the Optane consumer line now looks like this.

As can be seen, due to the small volume of the 3D XPoint module, even by 128 GB, it was possible to get a significant increase in the recording speed due to the parallelization of the streams. However, in general, performance characteristics do not look outstanding. Another significant improvement is the support of the energy saving mode (Idle State). But the price per unit of storage has remained unchanged, and this still makes Intel Optane drives expensive compared to other SSDs.
Anandtech experts have several Intel Optane 800p modules at their disposal, which made it possible to test not only individual drives, but also RAID arrays of them built on the basis of

So, Intel continues to expand the line of drives Optane. In the face of the 800r family, we see one more step in the direction of consumers - they are offered a full-fledged SSD, which can be used alone in a mobile computer, comparable in characteristics to the best Flash SSD, and in some ways superior to them. If the performance of Intel Optane continues to grow and the cost decreases, it will be an interesting option to consider.
