Saudi Arabia marks the top ten

PC World magazine announces a new ambitious project of the builders of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology ( KAUST ), which will open in a year in the city of Tuval in Saudi Arabia. It will have an IBM Blue Gene / P supercomputer installed, the peak performance of which will reach 222 teraflops. As expected, this will allow him to take the sixth place in the ranking of computers in the world at once.

The computer under the name "Shahin" (Arabic. Peregrine Falcon ), will fit in 16 racks. However, the server room built for it is designed for 500. Although many of them will be set aside for file storages and other auxiliary equipment, there is plenty of room for growth.

KAUST IT Director Majid Al-Ghaslan says that in the future the country will need much more power - even petaflops will not be limited. In addition to computerization of the processes of exploration and development of oil fields, such machines will be used for scientific research. All of these are steps towards transforming the Arab economy from raw materials to high-tech, he added.
