Online Storage: Which is Better?

PC World magazine conducted a comparative testing of 17 online file storage services. Convenient and usually free, these services are increasingly used in everyday office work.

The main advantage of online storage is that it is accessible from any computer. You can open your documents from work, from home or from a hotel. Moreover, these documents are also available for your colleagues, that is, with the help of online hosting, comfortable work together on documents is provided. Each of the 17 services tested by PC World magazine has its own characteristics. Some of them are more adapted for individual use, while others are more suitable for sharing files.

Six services specialize in backup storage: IBackup , XDrive , FirstBackup , Data Deposit Box , ElephantDrive and Mozy . Almost all of them are paid (at least a few dollars a month), but have a free trial period. These services work with a special client program and are not well adapted for collaboration. For example, Xdrive requires that other users also register on the site in order to access your files. But the service Xdrive allows broadcast content to mobile phones. Almost all of the above services can back up data from your computer automatically, according to a schedule. For example, every day at 17-30 copy your working folders to a remote server.

Data Deposit Box service is allocated with an unusual tariff plan: one cent per 1 MB per month without a minimum limit. That is, if you haven’t been active for a month, you don’t pay anything.

ElephantDrive and Mozy are completely free services. The first allows you to store up to 500 MB of data for free, and the second up to 2 GB. Such a “charity” will obviously end simultaneously with the end of beta testing.

The Online File Folder service (owned by GoDaddy) is the only one that performs encryption and zip-archiving of files “on the fly” via a web interface. Access to a remote disk can be done through Windows Explorer, through which you can also search for files and other options.

The service Streamload Mediamax is more suitable for storing media files: music, video and photos. With traffic up to 500 MB per month payment is not required. This is a new service for which the client program has not even been released yet. There is only a web interface.

Among other online storage can be distinguished Box.net in the style of Web 2.0 (there is even support for tags) with a free limit of 1 GB and 4shared - perhaps the best among free services. According to experts from PC World magazine, 4shared is better suited than others to upload files to other users. Here you can protect the folder with files with a password and inform its colleagues.
