The new
Yahoo Messenger 8 pager, which is currently in beta testing, has been released with the
Yahoo Messenger Plug-in SDK Developer Toolkit. With it, you can create your own plugins.
Pagers are becoming more complex programs. The thesis is true for Yahoo Messenger 8. Just look at its new interface (
screenshot ) to verify this (by the way, the program takes from 30 to 50 MB in RAM). The extended functionality can be judged even by the interface elements that are visible in the screenshot: the “Contacts” and “Actions” menu, direct access to radio stations and the Yahoo Answers knowledge base, access to the phone and your own e-mail box, links to social networking blogs Yahoo 360, the search bar, and most importantly - the “
Plug-ins ” button. This new button appeared only in the latest beta version of the program. Obviously, with its help you can connect a variety of plug-ins to Yahoo Messenger. Actually, the above-mentioned functions for access to radio stations, a social network and the Yahoo Answers knowledge base are implemented in the form of plug-ins.
Yahoo invites independent developers to create their own extensions to the program. With the help of the published
Yahoo Messenger Plug-in SDK SDK, even very simple JavaScript and Flash modules can be integrated into the program. These plugins will be placed on top of the standard Pager interface or may be part of the communication process, working in the background.
')
Yahoo representatives are calling for "creating simple plugins, like HTML web pages, or complex ones like multi-user collaboration programs using ActiveX, Flash, DHTML, Ajax, and other web technologies." Finished modules will be published in a
special directory on the site Yahoo. The creation of branded plug-ins have already been announced by such Internet companies as Amazon.com, AmericanGreetings.com, Coupons.com, eBay, NewsGater and others. Their development will be available at the beta stage of the Yahoo Messenger.
Other new features that have appeared in the program: an increase in the contact list to 1000 contacts, sound effects during a telephone conversation, an increase in the maximum size of transferred files to 1 GB.
Interestingly, the latest beta version of Yahoo Messenger has a new message in the status field: “Microsoft LCS Status”. Perhaps this is evidence of the compatibility of Yahoo Messenger and Live Messenger networks. Despite the fact that the two companies announced the future compatibility of their instant messaging networks in October 2005, they began to take concrete steps in this direction only now.
