Opera 9: the final release was not entirely successful

June 20, the official release of the ninth version of the Opera browser. The latest version embodies many new features, including a built-in BitTorrent p2p client, widget support, and independent settings for individual websites. Unfortunately, the joy at the release of Opera 9 was overshadowed by the poor quality of the distribution.

The first public beta of Opera 9 appeared in late April. Even then, it was clear to everyone that the ninth version of the browser will become revolutionary in many ways thanks to the support of several fundamentally new functions, including support for widgets and content blocking.

Opera widgets are small web applications that function as if independent of the browser. Like the Firefox extensions, they use the browser's software engine, but the difference is that Opera widgets can work in a separate window and have their own graphical interface. For example, it could be some kind of branded RSS reader or an online game in a separate window on the desktop.

Already, the Opera widget catalog contains several dozen of such programs. These are special applications for searching the Internet, crosswords, various games, a program for viewing the weather forecast, fresh comics, listening to the radio and much more. Developers can easily create their own widgets and upload them to a public directory on the Opera website.

The ninth version of Opera also has a BitTorrent file sharing client, so it no longer needs to be downloaded and installed separately.

Another new feature is the universal content blocker. You can remove various elements from a web page or the entire site in a couple of clicks, for example, banner ads or graphics.

Other innovations include enhanced rich text editing, selection of search engines for the search bar, reduced web page images directly on tabs (hover over), individual display settings for each site, support for Atom, Web Forms 2.0, SVG, enhanced support XMLHttpRequest, etc. The full list of innovations contains about a hundred points.

After examining the final release of Opera, the fans of the Norwegian browser were disappointed. Both in the Russian forums and in foreign blogs, perplexity reigns. Even the biggest fans of the Norwegian browser tend to return to the stable version 8.54.

The ninth version is full of deficiencies. For example, each widget takes up space on the taskbar, but it cannot be managed from there. Many Ajax programs do not work in the browser, even those that worked normally in the beta version of Opera 9, including Gmail, Yahoo Mail Beta, Google Calendar and the Blogger toolbar. In the end, Opera 9 requires much more space in RAM than previous releases. Very similar to the fact that there are repeated known problems with memory leaks, known from Firefox.
