Social networks will replace web portals

Social networks, mobile video and “google” are the main trends that will affect the transformation of the Network in the coming years. This opinion was expressed by analysts from the investment company Piper Jaffray at the opening of the annual Global Internet Summit.

The Global Internet Summit took place June 12-14 , 2006 in California. It is held the second time. This year the summit was held under the loud motto “The new order in the Internet”. Safa Rashtchy, Managing Director and Senior Analyst at investment company Piper Jaffray, spoke at the opening of the event. He described the current situation on the Internet with one capacious word: “guglizm”. The search giant inspires many start-up businesses with its success. Moreover, after the advent of Google, even the principles of creating new Internet companies have changed.

One of the issues discussed at the summit - social networks. According to experts, this new Internet phenomenon can significantly affect the future of the Network, despite the fact that there is still some skepticism about their ability to generate financial income. Social networks such as MySpace are already competing with traditional portals. The same MySpace in attendance has already bypassed the popular portals of MSN and AOL, and came close to Yahoo . Now MySpace lags behind the most popular site in the world by about 30%. For example, in March 2006, the MySpace audience was about 50 million people. And this is despite the fact that the site has relatively recently started its work - just a couple of years ago. Even Google did not develop at such a fast pace.

On the other hand, most social networks and video sharing sites (like YouTube ) still cannot reach the level of stable profitability. For this reason, some experts compare the excitement around them with the excitement that was observed during the Internet boom in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Since social networks in many respects are replacing web portals, experts express the view that representatives of these two categories will soon begin to work closely together. It is possible that Yahoo and other portals will try to enter into partnership agreements with MySpace and other social networks.
