New advances in crime prediction

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) last week reported on new successes achieved in working on a program to identify criminal intent in a person in a crowd. The program, formerly known as Project Hostile ( Project Hostile ), changed its name to more neutral Future Identification Technology ( FAST ) technologies and proved to be effective during pilot tests.

During them, a set of sensors consisting of cameras, infrared sensors and laser scanners, recorded various behavioral parameters of 140 volunteers. Those, in turn, the team began to behave "suspiciously." DHS Research Representative John Verrico says that in 78% of cases the system identified such people as likely dangerous. In a real situation, law enforcement agencies would have started working with such a person. FAST equipment is quite mobile and fits into a regular autotrailer, which makes it easy to deploy it where needed.

Besides the fact that the project is only a year old, he has already received negative reviews for what works in fact on the principle of a polygraph, only at a distance. Laser scanners measure the pulse and respiration rate, and infrared sensors, along with cameras, measure the temperature of certain areas of the body and face. Applying such a kit in a real crowd, excited by the upcoming sports match or concert, the security services risk a huge percentage of false positives, said security expert Bruce Schneier .
