New technologies for video distribution on the web

Several American startups, including BitTorrent , offer alternative options for transferring large video files over the Internet. Large video studios that are planning to distribute their products through the Network may be interested in such technologies.

Nowadays, video becomes the main “traffic generator” on the Internet. In general, traffic from transferring video files on the Internet doubles every three to four months. According to Akamai, which maintains an extensive network of proxy servers on backbone links, about half of the traffic in its network provides video recordings of US baseball league games. According to experts, baseball games can provide up to 20% of traffic on the entire Internet. You can believe this if you consider their length of hours.

Large Internet companies, content providers, are also interested in the emergence of a way to unload the main communication channels and save on paying for traffic.

Among American startups that offer new ways to distribute files over the Internet, the following can be highlighted: Itiva, BitTorrent, Pando , Perenety and Kontiki, writes SiliconValley. Some of these startups are well known to the general public (BitTorrnet), while others only plan to make themselves known.

These companies can significantly affect the data transfer market, which the analytic company estimates at $ 1.2 billion in 2005, and by 2011 it should grow to $ 7 billion. A little less than half of this money is expected to go to content producers, and the rest is for service providers who provide data transfer.

Each startup offers its own solution. The BitTorrent peer-to-peer file sharing network has been well known for about two years. Here the problem of transferring files is shifted to the shoulders of millions of ordinary users who transfer files along a chain to each other, in parts. Recently, the company BitTorrent is trying to get rid of the "pirated" image and entered into an agreement with the company Warner Bros., for which it will distribute movies and television shows.

However, BitTorrent program can not be called simple and convenient for ordinary users. Pando's peer-to-peer network is much simpler. Here the file download process is initiated via email. The user receives an email with a link, and the Pando software independently searches for and downloads the desired file from the peer-to-peer network. The advantage of the Pando network is that it allows video publishers to choose the audience for viewing the material. Files on the network cannot be accessed unauthorized. About half a million users have already installed the Pando program, and the company has received venture financing of $ 7 million from Intel .

A similar peer-to-peer technology is being developed by the Perenety startup. A feature of their system is the support of social networks. The user receives a notification when his friend downloads this or that content from the Web.

Other startups, for example, Itiva , are trying to solve the problem of transferring files with the help of Internet providers. According to their idea, a potentially popular file is copied to the ISP's cache server and is downloaded from there to users.
