Will Abkhazia and South Ossetia have a domain?

Today, one of the essential attributes of any state is its own domain zone. It is in all states, regardless of the degree of their wealth and the state of the economy. At the end of last week, the REGNUM news agency raised the question of the chances of getting their domain zones by Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

On Sunday, the official site of the REGNUM published a message “an expert who wished to remain anonymous,” who claimed that both Abkhazia and South Ossetia could claim their own domain zones in the same way as Kosovo. The first is on AB or AP (the Abkhaz call their unrecognized state of Apsny), and the second on OS or SO (although these two letters are currently occupied by Somalia). In principle, such a desire can really arise. Today, a private domain zone is one of the signs of a full-fledged state. Moreover, the importance of the Internet was clearly demonstrated during the Georgian-Ossetian war.

However, the expert emphasizes that the real chances of getting their own domain zones from these unrecognized states are negligible. After all, ICANN is "under US control." And America never (at least at this stage) recognizes neither Abkhazia nor South Ossetia. However, such a statement caused an uproar in ICANN itself. The Russian representative of this organization even condescended to comment. He replied that, firstly, “ICANN is not under the leadership of the US government,” and secondly, “as regards the distribution of national top-level domains, the decision on which code a particular state receives is not decided by ICANN, but by standardization organization ".

Nevertheless, I think everyone understands that it will not be possible to get their own domain zones of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. At least, until they are recognized at least by the UN. And this is not expected in the near future. If the national domains of these countries still appear, they will become a clear symbol of their independence.
