Microsoft SenseWeb: Geographic Maps in Real Time

A new Microsoft project called SenseWeb provides for the imposition on topographic maps of information that is collected in real time from various sensors and webcams.

The idea is this: a user can go to the Windows Live Local site (this is the new name of Microsoft Virtual Earth) and choose to view any region on the map. On the screen, he will see a map of roads with marks in those places where various sensors and webcams are installed. By selecting any camera, you can see what is happening on the roads at the specified point. How it works is visible in the screenshot .

The Microsoft SenseWeb project, written by Tech Review, provides for a minute update on the map of information on fuel prices (from various gas stations), traffic jams, queues at restaurants, free parking spaces, etc. A motorist, in whom a car receives information via the Internet on an onboard computer, will be able to better navigate where he should go and where he should not. Perhaps the computer itself will be able to make such recommendations, based on the well-known habits of its "owner" and relevant information.

It must be said that information about the intensity of traffic since January 2006 is available on Yahoo Maps. How to collect information about the queues at restaurants and free parking spaces - Yahoo has not yet thought of.

In the SenseWeb project, the information will be updated by the users themselves. Anyone who has a sensor (thermometer, webcam, etc.) can join the project and upload information from their sensor to SenseWeb. Previously, he must specify the exact coordinates of the sensor (longitude and latitude) and the type of data (temperature, fuel prices, etc.).

Interestingly, research in this direction goes not only to Microsoft, but also, for example, at the University of Southern California, where they are developing a similar project . Only there information from sensors that measure temperature, pressure and sound volume is integrated into Google Earth maps. Approximately the same systems are developed and successfully sold to private firms and government organizations of Agent Logic and Corda .

The Microsoft project is different in that everyone can participate in it, as well as some specific details that make it easier to work with online maps. For example, a user can highlight a region on a map and search for relevant information in that region, display a list of sensors, or narrow the search.
