WoW goes to the big screen

The film company Legendary Pictures (a division of Warner Bros.) has acquired the rights to the screen version of the online game World of Warcraft. After the release of the film, the most popular game on the Internet may experience a new influx of participants.

Today, the number of residents of the virtual “World of Warcraft” is approaching 7 million people. Each of them pays up to $ 15 per month. Many devote their “second life” several hours a day and spend years on character development. As in other MMOG class games, the plot of World of Warcraft is not limited in time, that is, you can play it all your life.

Wacraft World was the first MMOG in the world to attract the attention of Hollywood. In the shooting of the film will help game developers from the company Blizzard Entertainment. Blockbuster promises to be very spectacular.

The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but the cost of the license may not be as big as the experts suggest. After all, this is a mutually beneficial deal. After the release of the film, game publishers can expect millions of new players to enter the game, each of whom will pay about $ 15 a month. This year, publishers expect to receive more than $ 1 billion from a subscription, so the output of the film is not so much a profit from the sale of a license as an opportunity to expand its core business.

Representatives of Blizzard say that “they have been looking for a suitable studio for a very long time” to shoot a film. Now the company is going to hire a screenwriter to adapt the game to the big screen. They will take an active part in the film making process.

Two more films are being prepared at the same time as WoW based on the Grand Theft Auto and Halo video games. The latter is due out in summer 2007 and is being created in collaboration with Microsoft.

We can assume that the film based on the game World of Warcraft will receive a fairly large budget and will become a large-scale epic in the style of "The Lord of the Rings." So far nothing is known about the future film: neither the budget, nor the name of the director, nor the cast, nor the release date.
