Managed Access Switches SNR-S2965

At the end of 2015, the SNR switch family was replenished with a new line of access level switches - SNR-S2965. The series includes three models of the device:

Newer models are equipped with more GigabitEhternet ports than regular FastEthernet access switches. Thanks to additional gigabit ports, the operator has the opportunity to provide premium rates with high ARPU. The S2965 series of switches is a kind of intermediate solution between traditional FE access and the increasingly popular Gigabit switches.

Included with the switch is a power cord with an L-shaped connector, a console cable, a ground cable, mounting brackets in a 19-inch rack, rubber feet-stickers and a connector for connecting RPS-power.

On models with 8 and 24 ports, the connectors are located on the front panel. - this greatly simplifies the installation and maintenance of equipment. The power connector for the 48-port model is located at the back.

The SNR-S2965-24T switch model has an RPS port with external power monitoring. Due to the presence of the port, the autonomy of the switch can reach from 8 to 20 hours. The RPS version is only available for the 24-port model. Therefore, unlike other models, the 24-port version has a larger number of indicators. In addition to the power supply diodes, self-diagnostics and the status of the ports, the backup power status indicator appeared in the version with RPS.

The RPS indicator only glows when the switch is powered by a 12V power supply. Otherwise, there is no indication. It is very convenient when working on the site.
From a 12-volt battery, the SNR-S2965-24T-RPS switch can last more than 14 hours.

The increase in the number of “gigabit” ports qualitatively improved the performance of switches. The entire SNR S2965 line can operate at full port speed without oversubscription. The exact data are shown in the table below:

8- and 24-port models have a passive cooling system. A fan is installed to maintain the required temperature.

The SNR-S2965 series of switches has several ways to control devices:

convenient and simple web-interface
classic cisco-like CLI with syntax fully compatible with other SNR switches
SNMP protocol

In some cases, the initial configuration of the switch is conveniently done using the web interface. For example, configure an IP address for management or check the status of ports.

To ensure network security, a number of functions are implemented in the SNR switches.
First, it is the isolation of access ports, prohibiting the passage of traffic between ports. This function is performed by creating a group to which ports are added that require isolation between themselves.

Benefits of RPS


A little attention should be paid to the benefits of using the RPS (redundant power supply) power system. To power the switch from the RPS connector, a voltage of 12V is required. Due to this, it is possible to supply power to the switchboard without additional conversions. This increases the efficiency of the power supply and reduces heat generation inside the device. About the possibilities of ensuring uninterrupted power supply of the switch thanks to the RPS mentioned above.

RPS test


We decided to test the RPS in the lab. To do this, we connected the switch power supply from the lead-acid battery SNR-BAT-12-12 (12V; 12 Ah) and the uninterruptible power supply SNR-UPS-60/12 with a 12-volt output and charging function, providing connection of loads up to 60 W. Monitoring of the voltage at the output of the battery connectors was carried out using the SNR-ERD-3s remote monitoring and control device, which was polled via SNMP and visualized the data obtained by the MRTG utility. For testing on a laboratory switch, we created conditions with 7 active Fast Ethernet access ports and two active SFP Gigabit Ethernet ports.

According to the results of the tests, the circuit with power from the RPS port showed a good battery life (about 14 hours). As you can see on the graph: at point A, the output voltage at the battery terminals is 14.3V, the switch operates on 220V mains. At this point, the system switched to battery power. In this position, she worked for 14 hours until the voltage reached the minimum allowable value (11V). To prevent the battery from discharging, the SNR-UPS-60/12 automatically disconnected the power from it. In the interval from point B to point C, the switch did not work. At point C, 220V power was restored and the charging process began, the total time of which was about 6 hours. At point D, we see the value of the battery output voltage equal to 14.3V, which corresponds to the full charge of the battery.

In general, the main advantages of the SNR-S2965 switch range are the availability of GE ports in addition to the FE ports and the presence in the switch line with an RPS port. The first allows you to make the most flexible network in the provision of services, as well as provide access at speeds above 100Mb / s, which will expand the possibility of creating new tariff plans. The second advantage allows you to build fault-tolerant networks and monitor their status.
