Visa and Nokia packed credit card in mobile

Credit cards in plastic are a technology of the past. Visa launched the world's first service program for contactless smart cards integrated into a mobile phone.

The Mobile Visa Wave pilot program was launched in Malaysia together with the Nokia mobile phone manufacturer. This is the first step towards the creation of a universal "electronic wallet", which in the future may become a familiar and indispensable accessory of every person. In principle, such an “electronic wallet” can be integrated into any mobile device, be it a laptop, smartphone or pocket computer.

The Malaysian project uses the Visa Wave contactless smart card technology, which uses a radiochip instead of a magnetic strip. Thus, it is possible to read information from a card at a short distance from it (as in transport cards for Moscow electric trains).

Visa Wave cards appeared two years ago, and now there are about 4 million such cards in the world, mainly in the USA. From Asian countries, these maps are only available in Malaysia, Taiwan and South Korea. Soon they will also appear in Japan and other countries of the region.

Testing of Visa Wave cards integrated into a mobile phone will last four months. The new technology will be tested on 200 Malays-holders of the Visa Wave card, reports AP. Each of them, along with a familiar smart card, will receive a prototype Nokia 3230 mobile phone with an integrated Visa Wave chip. With this machine, you can make payments in stores and service centers equipped with the usual Visa Wave readers — such as two and a half thousand in Malaysia.

According to representatives of Visa, the creation of an electronic wallet based on a mobile phone is a completely natural stage in the development of technology. Choosing Malaysia as a testing ground for new technologies, the company management expects that by the end of this year up to 10% of all Visa cards will work in a contactless way, and in three to five years there will be a majority.
