Friedrich Engels and C ++ programming language

Not so long ago, I recalled the old times in the article “The History of One Programmer or the Path from Easy to Point” (Parts One and Two ). As I wrote, I remembered many funny and not so many things that happened in the past. About one of these things I wanted to tell.

It would seem that there can be a connection between Friedrich Engels and the C ++ language. I also could not have imagined that such a connection is minimal, microscopic, but still exists in our vast world. To learn more - follow under cat. But I warn you, under the cut a dozen links to photos.

"Anti-Dühring" in our days

This happened 10 years ago, when I got my first job in one office, which arose on the basis of the ruins of the coal research institute. One day at my work I attended to the contents of an old bookcase. No one ever approached him, but I still useful to look at what is in it. I do not remember what exactly the cupboard was filled with, but with something like Soviet literature and the old works of the scientific research institute. However, apart from all the books, Friedrich Engels’s book Anti-Düring, one of the main works of the founder of Marxism, lay.

Only having nothing to do, I turned the cover and, to my great surprise, I saw the picture shown in the following picture. I was 18 years old, not to say that I was very impressionable, but what I saw just struck me. I used to tell how difficult it was to get technical books at that time. And here is one of the evidence.

C ++ programming language

Not believing my eyes, I turned another page and all doubts were discarded. Before me was really a great classic work, but not one of the Marxists, but the creator of the C ++ language, Bjarne Straustrup .

Spread of the book, 1991

Preface in the artifact

Shocked, I began to study the book. It turned out that an unknown programmer copied every page spread by a method unknown to me so far. Copies are disgusting by our standards of quality and printed on thin paper. Due to the fact that the copies were taken from the turns between each page there is an emptiness, I showed it in the photo. There you can also look at the type of paper. Below are a few where I tried to reflect the most interesting places:

Gluing on cardboard cover

On the last page there is a wonderful artifact of the artifact! Instead of describing the work of Straustrup, the last page is the description of the book “Computer Patch Networks” by one Verma P.

Artifact on the artifact makes it even more expensive

I will add that the book is very well stitched with threads, the pages are neatly cut with a typographic knife, and in general the real “Anti-Dühring” was probably made not too better than this creation.

Binding

In conclusion, I want to say that this artifact for me personally is the personification of an entire era. Epochs when imposed values were replaced by others. Imagine a picture of a programmer who tears up a Marxist text with a root in order to put under his cover the knowledge that he personally needs. Authorities imaginary are replaced by real authorities. C ++ under the cover of Friedrich Engels. "Anti-Dühring" - for some reason, it still fit ...

That was the time.
