Critical vulnerability in Xfce, which could lead to the failure of the monitor, has not yet been fixed

Xfce is a lightweight desktop environment for Linux and other Unix-like systems, loved by many for its stability and rich customization options. Unfortunately, the development of the project is rather slow, the last major version (Xfce 4.12) was released more than two years ago, and many bugs live for years.

A year and a half ago, one of the users encountered a bug that led to a partial loss of monitor performance. Naturally, he left a bug report : “The default boot screen caused damage to my monitor!”

Then the bug could not be reproduced, a possible patch covering the vulnerability was proposed, but it was never tested due to the absence of the necessary equipment from the author. The author of the bug did not get in touch anymore, which is not surprising and quite natural in case of monitor damage.

After a year and a half, one of the users of Reddit confirmed that the bug is still not fixed:

At the moment, you can make a few general recommendations:

  1. Do not take loud headlines seriously;
  2. Stroke the cat;
  3. Apply the patch, but only if you do not have a dog , otherwise compatibility problems may occur;
  4. Read the comments on the bug report and post on Reddit , it's worth it;
    If you encounter a bug in an open project, add it to the bugzilla;
    Support the open source project you are using - for example, Xfce .
