Spreadtrum SC9861G-IA - Atom cores for export

As soon as we complained about the completion of the career of Intel Atom processors for smartphones, there was encouraging news on this topic. We love good news very much, so we’ll be happy to share it.

Chinese microelectronics manufacturer Spreadtrum , widely known in narrow circles thanks to its chips for smartphones, announced the release of a new model SC9861G-IA . Unlike previous models that were classic ARM SoCs, the computational basis for this is the Intel Airmont 8-core processor architecture used in Intel Atom processors (codenamed Cherry Trail ). In addition to Intel cores, the SoC includes an LTE modem with a maximum speed of 300 Mbps and a graphics core PowerVR GT7200.

This combination of components allows the manufacturer to position its product as a SoC for smartphones of the highest and middle class. Indeed, his performance indicators are quite decent: the camera is up to 26 MPiks, the display is QHD (2560x1440), the playback of 4k video at a frequency of 30 fps. However, the topic of energy efficiency has not yet been disclosed.

Spreadtrum can hardly be called a trend setter in the field of systems on chips, however, the first step is the hardest. Intel has accumulated a large number of technologies and products that were abandoned as part of the 2016 reorganization. While they are still relevant, why not use them to third parties? I think it would be fairer than just put a cross on them.
