Greenlight is dead. Long live the Direct

Valve announces the closure of Greenlight.

For more than four years that have passed since the launch of Greenlight, the number of published games has increased many times. More than a third of all games was published in 2016.

Valve found that, although this model has shortened the path between developers and players, Steam will not be able to lead to the ultimate goal - the system of direct distribution of games. Therefore, in the spring of 2017, a model with the working title Steam Direct will replace the Greenlight.

From now on, in order to be published on Steam, the developer will have to provide a package of certain documents (including tax documents), be tested (both for individual developers and companies) and pay a refundable fee, which Valve has not yet decided on oh, I don’t know so tasty! . A survey of developers has shown that they are willing to pay for the right to publish from 100 to 5,000 US dollars.

Combined with changes in Steam Discovery 2.0 (more games offered to the player on the page, consideration of recommendations of friends plus the ability to filter the types of games in which you are not fundamentally interested) this presumably allows you to separate the sheep from the rams, sailors from the salags to increase the quality level of Steam and as a platform for publications, and as a store.

In the discussions, everything is raging: the developers, the developers, buyers, and sympathizers who have failed so far. All agree on one thing: something had to be done with Greenlight. Further the heap begins is small. If to state in theses, it will look like this.
