Today, Reuters, citing Seoul Economic Daily, reported that Samsung is discussing the possibility of dividing the company. The Korea Herald reports that it is also possible to sell the division responsible for the company's PC business to the Chinese giant Lenovo. Information was received from an unnamed source inside Samsung, close to the discussion.

The purpose of the division of the company called the desire to increase the market value of Samsung from the Li family - the company's founders, as well as greater control over Samsung’s most profitable business - over the production of smartphones.

The initiator of the division is one of the investors of Samsung, hedge fund Elliott Management. As part of the Elliott Management plan, which was published in October, Samsung Electronics, a company belonging to Samsung, will be divided into holding and operating companies. Then it is planned to merge the holding company with Samsung C & T, and to register the operating company at the USA Stock Exchange NASDAQ. To increase the value of the securities of the company Elliott Management proposes to pay shareholders a one-time extra dividend worth about $ 27 billion.

In addition to increasing the market value of the company and establishing more tight control over the production of smartphones, the goal of separation is to restructure and increase the transparency of management.

Since the hedge fund is a shareholder of the company, a month ago Samsung announced that they would consider this plan.

The sale of areas that are ineffective in the opinion of the company's management is standard Samsung practice. If the management of the holding decides that the PC business shows insufficient profitability, Samsung can get rid of it. The most obvious buyer is called the Chinese giant Lenovo, which for the past few years has been a leader in the notebook market.

While the company Samsung refuse any comments on the subject of possible changes.
