Microsoft offers a new format for images.

Yesterday at the Photo Marketing Association (PMA) 07 International Convention and Trade Show, resembling in Las Vegas, Microsoft introduced a new format for storing images - HD Photo.

Microsoft said it intends to make HD Photo a standard and will soon offer a new format to standards organizations.

Images saved in the new format will take 2 times less space than similar ones in the JPEG format and will also contain fewer artifacts resulting from lossy compression.
By the way, the new format will allow to compress data for storage both with losses (a la JPEG) and without (lossless).

In addition, the new format allows you to store data in a wider range (48 bits / pixel).

Operations such as changing the color balance or exposure as a result do not affect the image data itself (saved as a parameter) and can be further canceled.

Main types of metadata are supported.

The specification of the new format can be downloaded here .

HD Photo support is already implemented in Vista, but can be implemented in XP and 2003 using the free Windows Imaging Component (WIC) codec.
HD Photo is also included in .NET 3.0

To implement the codec on non-windows platforms and devices, Microsoft offers the HD Photo Device Porting Kit, which can be downloaded from the Microsoft website .

A beta version of the plug-in is also available to support the new format in Adobe Photoshop CS2 and CS3. Download the plugin here .

As it seems to me, the MC has jumped in time. JPEG has long been morally obsolete and no one seems to be moving except DNG except Adobe.

By the way, the image in Photo HD really takes up almost 2 times less space than a similar one, but saved in JPEG (in both cases the quality is 90%).
