"Cossacks 3" - a brief overview of the restarting of the legendary RTS

Two days ago, on September 20, the release of the third part of the legendary historical RTS "Cossacks 3" took place without much noise and advertising campaign. The new game from the Ukrainian studio GSC Game World is essentially a restart of the series, as it returns us to the time period of the first part. However, this is not to say that it is bad. The RTS genre has been stagnating for many years, only occasionally delighting fans with quality titles, so the release of Kazakov came in handy.

Reviews to the game on Steam are controversial, which indicates the dampness and zagagovannosti project. But I propose to give the new "Cossacks" a chance. Review of the game under the cut.

First, a little historical background.

“Cossacks” is a historical RTS (Real Time Strategy), where the player is invited to take the side of one of the European states of the late XVII - early XVIII century. The game clearly spelled out the technical transition to the next century, which finally outlines the rejection of such types of troops as spearmen in favor of soldiers equipped with firearms.

The first part of the Cossacks: European Wars series came out more than fifteen years ago, back in 2000, and surprisingly, competed with the then monstrous Warcraft III, Heroes of Might and Magic III and other games of the RTS / TBS genre, occupying its own niche in CIS

By the way, the game has become relatively popular in the West.

"Cossacks" attracted gamers large-scale battles, where the number was in the hundreds (sometimes thousands) of units, as well as a difficult tactical component. Hiring one type of force, as is often the case in other RTS, did not bring the desired success. In the "Cossacks" had to differentiate the types of units of the army to achieve the best result, and the built-in combat systems, the commanders and, of course, artillery, gave the battles entertainment.

At the same time, the absence of microcontrol in its direct form left room for randomness in the outcome of the battle. There was also a chance that the own artillery could cover a detachment of their own infantry. Thus, the Cossacks can be attributed more to games where global macro control is important, as, for example, in 4X strategies.

The second part of the game was more controversial. It added the "morality of the army" - a single volley of artillery batteries could turn enemy forces into flight. Also, the action in the "Cossacks 2" occurs in a later historical period - the beginning of the XVIII century, which affected the technology and gameplay. In addition, the number of nations was reduced.

Self review

The first launch greets us with the already familiar launcher, who offers to set the basic parameters of the game. Let me remind you of the system requirements for developers (very benign for 2016):

The PC on which the review will be carried out is equipped with iron from 2011-2012, namely:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.4GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
VGA: nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti 2048MB 192bit
Disc drive: SSD OCZ-VERTEX4
