Mozilla stops working on Firefox OS and passes the source code to the open source community

Yesterday, September 27, Mozilla sent out notifications that it was shutting down work on the Firefox OS project (Boot to Gecko). Existing developments will be transferred to the open source community.

Back in 2015, the company's management concluded that the project Firefox OS did not meet their expectations. In July 2016, Mozilla stopped commercial development of its own operating system.

Firefox OS is an operating system for tablets and smartphones based on the free Gecko engine, in the development of which the Mozilla Foundation participated.

Firefox OS, according to the creators, has the following competitive advantages:

A few years later, none of the positions in this list could become decisive when buying a smartphone, because the ecosystem built around the platform began to play the main role.

Now the company is preparing Firefox OS for the transfer of the public for further work on the project. Its engine will be “cleaned” of associations with Mozilla.

The company recognized the complete commercial failure of the project and completely curtailed its presence in this area. Passing the same code is more of a “goodwill” gesture for those who have pinned their hopes on Firefox OS and have worked in this direction.
